As part of the New York City’s Summer Streets initiative, part of Park Avenue is closed off to cars and trucks and replaced with 3 mobile pools. Each pool is 8 foot by 22 foot long, 3 to 5 ½ feet deep. They were converted from dumpster containers, cleaned and equipped with layer of felt and pool linens, and filled with 4,600 gallons of chlorinated water weighing about 50,000 pounds. Engineering design services include load distribution calculation onto the road from each of the pool and deck columns, and four adjustable structural supports for each of the pool placed upon a 2’ x 3’ x ½” plywood block to further distribute the load and have less impact on the asphalt.
